What makes one child thrive while another turns to drugs, gangs, or other unlawful activities? Often it is the difference of having a caring, consistent adult role model in their lives. An adult who can show them that adults can be trusted to keep their promises and follow through on commitments.
Big Brothers Big Sisters provides thoroughly screened and trained adult mentors to work with children from single parent or other non-traditional homes. Volunteers make a one-year commitment and volunteer to work one on one with a child for at least four hours a week. Activities can be as simple as a walk in the park. The gift of time is priceless and has clearly measurable results.
Children matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister, as shown in a National Study conducted by a private firm showed that:
90% of youth in the program stay in school through graduation
95% do not report joining gangs, tried drugs or been arrested
98% of Little Sisters do not become pregnant teens
